REV. HENRY HOWARD THOMPSON, D.D.

1914-1915 

Henry Howard was born on May 3, 1887, in Winston County, MS, the son of William Young Thompson & Elizabeth (Peggy) Brice Stewart. He was the uncle of John Hervey Thompson who also served as minister of French Camp Presbyterian Church (1954-1955) He was married on June 20, 1917, in Natchez, MS, to Frances Emmamae Ellzey. 

Thompson’s high school education was received at French Camp Academy. He continued his education at Southwestern Presbyterian University in Memphis, TN, where he received a B.A. and M.A. At Southwestern Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Thompson was granted a B.D. He also completed additional study at New College in Edinburgh, Scotland. 

In 1914, Rev. Thompson was called to French Camp both as pastor of the Presbyterian Church and as president of French Camp Academy following the death of Rev. Mecklin, and as Rev. McCue had left for Virginia. His time was brief as Rev. McCue returned in 1915. 

Following his tenure in French Camp, Rev. Thompson served pastorates in Natchez, MS; Baton Rouge, LA; Bristol, TN; Ruston, LA; and Raleigh, NC. For a period of ten years, he served as Secretary of Evangelism of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. Rev. Thompson died on November 18, 1973, in Ruston, LA, and is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Leflore County, MS.
