REV. JAMES HARVEY ALEXANDER, D.D.

1856-1860 

Born on June 16, 1826, in Tennessee, James Harvey was the son of Josiah Pinckney and Margaret Amina Steele Alexander. He was married to Louisa Jane Bigham, also a native of Tennessee. 

After receiving his degree from Columbia Theological Seminary, and serving in the Tuscaloosa Presbytery of Alabama, Dr. Alexander came to pastor in Kosciusko in 1856. He also supplied churches at Poplar Creek, French Camp, and Carthage. 

Dr. Alexander served as pastor of the Kosciusko Presbyterian Church for 38 years, retiring in 1883. He continued there as Pastor Emeritus until his death in 1906. He served as a chaplain in the Confederate Army, and actively mentored and encouraged several young men who later entered the ministry. One of these young men was A. H. Mecklin who later pastored the French Camp Church. 

Dr. Alexander helped organize eleven churches in central Mississippi including the West Union Presbyterian Church on April 11, 1886. He was also an educator and teacher and served as the first Superintendent of Attala County Schools from 1882 to 1885. 

Dr. Alexander died one month before his eightieth birthday on May 14, 1906, in Attala County, MS. He was buried at Kosciusko City Cemetery.
