REV. G. W. BOGGS

1849-1850 

Boggs was born in Liberty, SC, in February 1819. He attended Columbia Theological Seminary, Columbia, SC, and graduated in 1845. He was licensed in April of that year by the Presbytery of South Carolina. He was ordained in 1846 or 1847 by the Presbytery of East Alabama. 

Rev. Boggs ministered among the Presbyterian pioneers in the Choctaw region of Mississippi on an itinerant basis and played a significant role in the formation of Olney Presbyterian Church in 1849-1850. Olney was located about 3 miles north of present-day French Camp. The church relocated to French Camp in 1854 and was renamed French Camp Presbyterian Church in 1869. 

Rev. Boggs pastored Hayneville, Layton, Livingston, and Bethel churches in Alabama for 7 years; churches in Washington and Augusta, GA, for 2 years; Camden, AL, for 7 years; and Valley Creek, AL, for 7 or 8 years. He lived at Oxford, AL, for 7 years. He ministered as a stated supply for several small struggling churches and was an evangelist in South Alabama Presbytery for about 27 years before going to Texas as an evangelist in 1878. He moved to Mississippi for 3 years and served churches including Kosciusko and Olney. His final pastorate of 6 years was in service to a church in Mason, TN. He was in the ministry for over 52 years.
