REV. T. RUSSELL NUNAN, D.D.
1988-1991
Nunan was born on March 22, 1907, in Atlanta, GA, the son of Joseph Halsey Nunan and Elizabeth (Bessie) Mae Adamson. He received a B.A. from Davidson College, (1930); a B.D. from Union Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY (1936). He was a Fellow at the Yale School of Alcohol Studies, New Haven, CT, (1948); and he received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Belhaven College, Jackson, MS, (1958). He served as a United States Navy Chaplain in World War II, The Korean War, and in the Naval Reserve. He served numerous Presbyterian churches in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, finally retiring as Pastor Emeritus of Greenville Presbyterian Church in Greenville, MS.
Dr. Nunan, along with fellow presbyter Sam Patterson was instrumental in giving new life to French Camp Academy in 1950 when Presbytery was considering closing the school. FCA was incorporated under a Board of Trustees, and he served on that board. In 1988-89, French Camp Presbyterian Church launched a major renovation of the sanctuary built in 1910 as a Memorial to Rev. Sam Patterson who died in 1987. Rev. Nunan provided invaluable support and leadership to that project while serving as stated supply of the church.
On his ninetieth birthday, the Mississippi Legislature honored Dr. Nunan for his contributions to Mississippi. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of French Camp Academy, Mississippi Fire Fighters Memorial Burn Center, Lighthouse Lodge, Mississippi Library Association, and the Bessie J. Taylor Home.
He died on December 8, 2006, at the age of 99, and was buried in the Greenville Cemetery, Washington County, MS.
