Tangible Love
Beginning in John 13, Jesus spends some personal and intimate moments with His disciples. He wants to instruct them and encourage them because the time has come for Him to go to the cross. He wants to prepare them. And what does He do first? He washes their feet. He gives them an example and calls them to love one another, to love tangibly and intentionally.
Powered Living
Power is an essential part of life. Power for our homes. Strength for our bodies. Power tools make work easier and faster. We love to surround ourselves with powerful, important people. Jesus talks about power in John 12, and it comes only through the way of the cross.
Devoted
We've all poured ourselves into something we believed was worth it. In John 12, Mary does something that seems extravagant—even wasteful—to everyone else. But Jesus sees something entirely different: wholehearted devotion. Join us as we explore what it looks like to love Christ without holding anything back, and why a life devoted to Him is never wasted.
The Resurrection and the Life
All of us carry burdens and struggles. They can be physical, psychological, emotional. What do we most need in order to make sense of it all. Twice in John 11, Jesus points His disciples and then Martha to the glory of God. Looking at life's difficulties through God's glory changes how we carry those burdens and struggles. Jesus wants us to challenge us to understand what we believe.
The Good Shepherd
We may not think about it, but shepherding is a way of life. Beyond the farmers that shepherd flocks, parents shepherd children, coaches shepherd athletes, teachers shepherd students, pastors and elders shepherd congregations. We are all being shepherded in some way. We are all following after something. What are you following in your life? John 10 calls us to follow the Good Shepherd.
The Church Jesus Has For Us Now
Jesus challenges our expectations about the Church in the Parable of the Wheat and Tares with a dose of reality, an absolute standard, and a promise to get His people Home safely.
The Blind See!
Have you ever played a game like Marco! Polo!? Or maybe you stubbed your toe on the coffee table when the lights were out. John 9 tells us a story of Jesus healing a man born blind, using the miracle to show us that He is the Light of the world. There is a difference between physical sight and spiritual blindness. Open our eyes that we may see!
Light of the World
The dark can be a scary place. We’re afraid of the dark when we are children, and if we’re honest, the dark can still be a scary place when we grow up. But then there’s not just the darkness around us. There’s also darkness within us. How we long for the light to pierce through the darkness. Jesus declares that He is the Light of the world, and whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.
A Parable Story
This passage has many questions surrounding it. The story - true or not - is an illustration of the Gospel. We see our need and that Jesus supplies that need, full of grace and truth.
Living Water
If you could choose something in the world to never run out, what would it be? Maybe you’d choose gasoline. Prices would certainly be lower if there were a never-ending supply of gasoline. Or maybe you’d choose money. No one would lack anything. Maybe things would be better if there was a never-ending supply of love and understanding. One person on Reddit said he wanted unlimited pizza. He called it an “Infini-pizza.” What about time? What if there was a never-ending supply of time? In our passage this morning, Jesus offers living water that never runs dry.
The Bread of Life
Have you ever done something for the wrong reason? We see examples of this all the time. People giving to charities for the recognition. Returning a lost item just for the reward. Supporting a person just so that another loses. In John 6, the folks who are following Jesus are doing it for the wrong reason. He calls us to follow Him in faith. Are you following Jesus? For what purpose?
Peace In The Presence Of Jesus
How much does fear motivate you in what you do and think on a day to day basis? Maybe you had to stand up in front of some people and talk. Maybe your mind is wrapped up in what other people are thinking about you. Why do we care so much about what others think? Fear can motivate us in how we raise our children, in what we wear, in how we approach others. John 6 is a story of how Jesus conquers our fears because of who He really is. If God is for us, who can be against us?
A Little Can Go a Long Way
When I was in college, I would take friends to my grandmother's house for Sunday lunch. Every Sunday there were leftovers, and poor college kids loved being able to take some delicious food back to campus. In John 6, Jesus makes leftovers. In fact, He ends up with more than He started with. Jesus can take a little, and He can make an abundance!
Who Do You Think You Are?
Who is Jesus? That is a question that has been discussed and answered by many. Some say Jesus was a great man. Others say that He was a wise teacher and prophet. Still others say that Jesus was a social reformer who challenged the organizations of the time. How you answer the question, "Who is Jesus," means more than just knowing your history. It is a question of life and death. How do you answer it?
Resurrection Hope
Can you live without hope? Where do you place your hope when things are going well or when things are going not so well? Many times we look at our circumstances and we say, "I hope this changes," "I hope this goes away," "I hope that it won't be another rainy day today." Peter points us to a hope beyond our circumstances. He shows us a resurrection hope that gives life, security, and joy! Where is your hope?
Do You Want To Be Healed?
It's hard going through illness or hardship. There is pain, hurt, difficulty, brokenness. All we want is to be better. Jesus comes to a man in John chapter 5 who has been paralyzed for 38 years, and He offers him so much more than this man can hope or imagine. Do you want to be healed? He's asking you the same question!
Faith in Jesus’ Word
Second Corinthians 5:7 tells us that "we walk by faith, not by sight." We live life trusting Jesus when things make sense and when things are very hard to understand. The story we read in the second part of John 4 contrasts two sets of folks: those who walk by faith and those who walk by sight. Will you take Jesus at His Word and trust Him?
The Water of Life
In John 4, Jesus meets a woman with a scandalous past. And in a conversation that goes from water to immoral lifestyle to worship, He gets at the very heart of what this woman needs. She needs life. She's looking for life and fulfillment in all the wrong places, and Jesus shows her who He is: the giver of the water of life!
The Answer is Jesus
Have you ever tried putting a puzzle together without the picture on the front of the box? It's not so easy. You don't know which corner is which or if it's upside down. In John chapter 3, both Nicodemus and some of John the Baptizer's disciples are trying to put the puzzle of life together but they're missing pieces. John points us to the answer. It's Jesus!
